Doctor Fish Pedicure
By Annabelle RoylanceA new fad in trendy pedicures is taking hold around the world. Select spas are offering their clients a revitalizing fish pedicure. The exact process will vary from region to region, but the gist of the treatment involves putting your bare feet in a pool of tiny carp called Garra Rufa, affectionately known as “doctor fish”.
The doctor fish actually nibble away at dead, flaking skin cells. They have no teeth and cannot remove healthy tissue. They are used as an alternative to razor blades and other tools to remove callouses and other hardened tissue. Some say it is more sanitary than razors too.
While they are entirely safe a hundred fish chewing on your flesh looks odd and unsettling as seen in this video:

Participants liken the sensation to a tickle or a massage, but all confirm it really works.
The foot treatment has been used in Turkey and across Asia, but Virgina salon, Yvonne Hair and Nails is the first to offer it in the United States. Since introducing the procedure they have served thousands.
The time in the pool is generally 15 to 30 minutes after which you are given a standard pedicure. The standard foot treatment is easier as the skin has been softened by the nibbling of the doctor fish.
