Two state lawmakers are urging stricter plastic surgery regulations in response to the death six months ago of Donda West, rapper Kanye West’s mother. Donda West died after liposuction, breast implant and tummy tuck surgeries.
These surgeries are performed across the country in outpatient clinics that do not always have the same oversight faced at a traditional hospital.
Sen. Mark Ridley-Thomas (D-Los Angeles) recently told the
Los Angeles Times that the law passed saying outpatient surgical centers must be accredited by a state-recognized agency has been ineffective.
The proposed legislation would require these facilities to be inspected regularly. Assemblywoman Wilmer Amina Carter is also urging new safeties.
In the US plastic surgeons are required to undergo eight years training between pre-med and medical school plus additional years of internship, residency followed by specialty training and fellowship.
As cosmetic surgery grows in popularity, it is increasingly important to research and choose a board certified surgeon.
